DynaBelt belt filtration strengthens primary treatment and stabilizes suspended solids removal
A municipal wastewater treatment plant in Apulia is undergoing an upgrade program of its headworks and primary treatment line. As part of the interim improvements, the plant required a robust, compact solution to enhance suspended solids (SS) removal in the primary sedimentation stage while maintaining operational continuity at variable f lows.

The case
The challenge
The plant needed to increase primary-stage solids capture under f luctuating hydraulic conditions, with average and peak flows that can vary significantly. The upgrade had to be implemented with limited footprint, reliable automatic operation, and minimal complexity for operators.
The solution
To reinforce primary treatment performance, the client selected Nordic Water DynaBelt self-cleaning belt filtration designed for primary suspended solids removal. The chosen configuration consisted of two belt filter units, providing both capacity and redundancy.
How the system works
Wastewater flows through a rotating filter belt that retains solids. When cleaning is required, the belt rotates; a brush assists in detaching retained solids and the belt is washed using high pressure spray water. An integrated emergency overflow ensures operational safety.
Equipment scope (as supplied for this project)
2 × DynaBelt TD 27 belt filters, complete with integrated solids screw conveyors.
Stainless-steel construction (EN 1.4404 / AISI 316L)
Dedicated control cabinet
Commissioning and start-up
The result
With belt filtration added to primary treatment, the plant strengthened its ability to handle variable flow conditions while targeting improved removal of suspended solids at the specified filtration cut size. The self-cleaning mechanism (belt rotation, brush and high-pressure wash) supports stable operation and helps reduce manual maintenance needs.
