DynaSand sand filters for sea water pre-treatment in the UAE
The two stage filtration with DynaSand filters is a pre-treatment facility to one of the large desalination plants located in Dubai, a part of the United Arab Emirates. The facility belongs to Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) and was installed in 2007. It has been in commercial operation since 2008.

Description
The sea water intake is located a few hundred meters out in the Persian Gulf. The raw water passes intake screens before entering the feed pumps that lift the water up to the main inlet channel in front of the DynaSand filters. From this point the water flows by gravity through the two DynaSand filter stages, and the filtrate then enters the water reservoir located after the f ilter plant. Finally the water is treated by reverse osmosis before distribution to consumers. The treated water is mainly used for drinking water and irrigation. Precipitation chemicals can, if needed, be added in the inlet channel in front of the DynaSand filters. Since the start of the plant it has not been necessary do dose chemicals to the DynaSand filters as the quality of the filtrate from the filters is high even without addition of chemicals. This is due to a proprietary Nordic Water technology.
