Food and beverage wastewater treatment

Food and beverage wastewater treatment must protect production, reduce discharge risk and control water cost. We design complete treatment trains that combine screening, primary DAF, biological treatment and final polishing to deliver reliable plant performance, compliant discharge and a practical route to reuse where required.

Food and beverage wastewater treatment

Food and beverage wastewater treatment removes solids, fats, oils and grease (FOG), organic load (BOD and COD) and, where required, nutrients. Most sites need an integrated solution. The right process depends on your wastewater profile, discharge permit, and operation conditions.

What outcomes should the treatment plant deliver?

A well-designed food and beverage wastewater treatment plant should help you:

  • Protect production from wastewater-related disruption

  • Reduce TSS and FOG before downstream treatment

  • Reduce BOD and COD to meet discharge targets

  • Remove biomass and final solids after biological treatment

  • Manage ammonia, nitrate and phosphorus where required

  • Reduce municipal discharge costs

  • Support water reuse and lower freshwater intake

Typical treatment train for food processing wastewater
Most food and beverage duties are best handled in stages.

First, screening removes larger solids and protects downstream equipment. Next, equalization helps smooth flow peaks and variations in wastewater strength. This gives a more stable feed to the treatment line.

Primary clarification is often managed with DAF to remove TSS and FOG. This reduces the load on the biological stages and improves overall stability.

Biological treatment then reduces the dissolved organic load that drives BOD and COD. This stage requires stable aeration and mixing to perform reliably. We can supply key equipment used in these treatment steps, such as blowers, diffusers, mixers, and sludge dewatering solutions. The exact selection depends on the process design and site requirements.

After biology, a polishing step removes biomass and fine solids. This helps stabilize final effluent quality. Where permits require it, the process can also include nutrient removal and reuse readiness.

DynaSand for nutrient polishing where required
Where nitrogen or phosphorus limits apply, DynaSand can be part of the polishing strategy. DynaSand Oxy can support nitrification and COD reduction. DynaSand Deni can support denitrification. In the right configuration, DynaSand can also remove suspended solids and phosphorus in a compact footprint.

Reuse readiness
If reuse or lower water intake is part of the goal, we can configure the treatment train to deliver a cleaner final effluent. This can support reuse directly or act as a feed to later advanced treatment stages.

Why DAF is used as primary clarification in food and beverage wastewater
DAF is well suited to food and beverage wastewater because it effectively removes suspended solids and fats, oils and grease (FOG). These contaminants are often light and tend to float rather than settle, which makes gravity sedimentation less effective.

DAF does not use physical separation surfaces that can clog with grease. This helps maintain stable performance even when wastewater quality varies. By removing solids and FOG early in the process, DAF reduces the load on downstream biological treatment and helps improve overall plant stability.

Our DAF range allows us to match the format to the duty:

  • High-rate DAF for higher flows and tighter footprints

  • Open-style DAF for high-solids duties

  • Compact DAF for smaller, remote or temporary applications

Why biological treatment still matters after DAF

DAF removes suspended solids and FOG effectively, but dissolved organics still drive BOD and COD in many food and beverage wastewaters. Where permits require tighter COD or nutrient reduction, biological treatment and final polishing are needed to reach consistent compliance.

Benefits for food and beverage operators

Frequently asked questions

Arrow Icon

What does DAF remove in food processing wastewater?
DAF removes suspended solids (SS) and fats, oils and grease (FOG) after coagulation and flocculation. In food and beverage plants, it is typically used as the primary clarification step ahead of biological treatment.

Is DAF enough on its own for food and beverage wastewater?
It can be sufficient for some indirect discharge cases, but direct discharge typically requires biological treatment and often polishing to meet tighter BOD, COD and nutrient limits.

Can you support water reuse as well as compliance?
Yes. We can design for discharge compliance, reuse readiness or a phased route towards reuse depending on site goals and water quality targets.

How do we remove biomass after biological treatment?
Biomass and residual solids can be removed using post-biological clarification and polishing technologies such as DAF, cloth filtration or sand filtration. The right choice depends on the solids profile, final TSS target and wider process design.

Can DynaSand help with nitrogen removal?
Yes. DynaSand Oxy can be used for nitrification and DynaSand Deni can be used for denitrification. In the right duty, DynaSand can also support simultaneous solids and phosphorus removal within the same stage.
